Description

This unit aims to provide students with an appreciation of the global context of the IT industry and attendant professional, cultural and operational issues. Students will consider the ways in which ICT is driving and enabling globalisation, and come to appreciate the challenges and issues of this on business. Emphasis will be placed on developing an understanding of how global companies organise and deliver their required IT services, through global standards, global technologies and architectures, various sourcing models, and global strategies. The unit will emphasise the importance of cultural differences and their impacts on global teams, especially global project teams and software development teams.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. independently investigate the global context of the IT and communication industry and the attendant professional, cultural and operational issues
  2. identify and critically analyse cultural models to understand the impact of culture on the adoption of technology and the operation of multicultural teams
  3. understand the impact of globalisation and the role of technology in its proliferation
  4. identify global technology organisations their structures and their effectiveness in the use and sale of technology in a global context
  5. identify and understand the differences in the adoption of technology by geography through both cultural and national differences
  6. identify and consider the adoption of technology trends that support globalisation and how they are adopted in a local setting. Examples to be considered are cloud computing, green IT and the virtual office
  7. identify and critically assess the validity of global standards in ICT. Examples to be considered would be ITIL/ISO PMBOK, Prince 2,the Open Source GPL and CMMI
  8. undertake professional project management processes through the use of project planning and team management tools
  9. understand and evaluate the outsourcing and offshoring options for an organisation, and assess their impact on the ability to deliver globally on required IT services for an organisation.
