Description
This unit provides an understanding of the development and management of data management systems in a dynamic business environment. It will not only introduce the fundamentals of data management, but will also discuss business intelligence (BI) a key support for better business decision-making. In doing so, the unit takes into account the business dimensions, imperatives and motivations that are associated with recent advances in technology and systems. The unit also has an eye to the future and specifically regarding business sustainability and the need to address a range of Green IT issues. On completing the unit, students should be able to use the knowledge gained in order to conduct their own research in this field and to evaluate proposals from vendors and IT consultants.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:
- understand the nature and principles of knowledge management, and the role and place of KM in data management and knowledge intensive organisations.
- explain the key theoretical and conceptual knowledge and frameworks of modern database management systems.
- explain the concept of business intelligence from both a technical and a personal/ organizational perspective.
- comprehend the essential role of business intelligence in gaining business advantage.
- apply the knowledge gained to facilitate deep questioning, analysis, advising and interpreting business practices.
