Description
The unit introduces you to the basic concepts of the World Wide Web (Web), and the principles and tools that are used to develop Web applications. The unit will provide an overview of internet technology and will introduce you to the Web protocols; HTML5, CSS, SSI and XML, client side processing with JavaScript and server side processing with PHP.

You are recommended to have completed the following unit(s) or have equivalent knowledge before starting this unit:
- CPT121 — Programming 1
You should have equivalent programming experience before starting this unit.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this unit students will be able to:
- define the protocols and systems used on the Web (such as XHTML, HTTP, URLs, CSS, SSI, and XML)
- explain the functions of clients and servers on the Web
- implement client-side scripts using JavaScript and server-side scripts using PHP
- design and implement an interactive web site with regard to issues of usability, accessibility and internationalisation
- demonstrate the ability to retrieve data from a database and present it in a webpage.
