Description

This unit extends the study of basic programming principles introduced in Programming 1. Advanced concepts of program design, implementation and testing will be introduced within a framework of object-oriented programming using the Java programming language. Attention is paid to graphical user interface development in the Java language, and the software design structures appropriate for modern computer software.

Prerequisites

Mandatory prerequisites

You must have successfully completed the following unit(s) before starting this unit:

  • CPT121 — Programming 1

If you have completed equivalent study at another university, please contact a Student Advisor for advice.

Or have equivalent Java programming experience, before starting this unit.

Special Requirements

  • Broadband access

Assessment

  • Assignment 1 (25%)
  • Assignment 2 (25%)
  • Invigilated Exam (50%)
For more information on invigilated exams see Exams and results

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this unit students will have:

  1. competence in the use of the Java programming language in the development of small to medium sized application programs that demonstrate professionally acceptable coding and performance standards
  2. an understanding of the principles behind the object oriented development process, and apply this understanding to the analysis and design of solutions for small scale problems
  3. skills to demonstrate a knowledge of basic algorithms and data structures, in particular the application of recursive algorithms, simple searching and sorting algorithms and simple list and tree structures (both using the Java Collection Framework, and by first principles)
  4. skills to demonstrate an introductory understanding of event-driven programming and graphical user interfaces.

This unit is an approved elective in the following courses:

This unit may be eligible for credit towards other courses:

  1. Many undergraduate courses on offer through OUA include 'open elective' where any OUA unit can be credited to the course. You need to check the Award Requirements on the course page for the number of allowed open electives and any level limitations.
  2. In other cases, the content of this unit might be relevant to a course on offer through OUA or elsewhere. In order to receive credit for this unit in the course you will need to supply the provider institution with a copy of the Unit Profile in the approved format, which you can download here. Note that the Unit Profile is set at the start of the year, and if textbooks change this may not match the Unibooks textbook list.
