Professional Recognition

The Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) has Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) accreditation, which enables graduates to gain teacher registration in Victoria. Reciprocal teacher registration arrangements are available throughout all Australian States and Territories. For further information, please contact local teacher registration authorities.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet three criteria to gain access into this course

1.       Academic

Bachelor degree or equivalent diploma 

2.       English Language

You must provide evidence of how you fulfil the minimum English language requirements in one of the two ways listed below:

a. Applicants whose secondary schooling was entirely in English:

• Secondary schooling achieved:

a score of 25 in units 3 and 4 of VCE English or VCE Literature;

a score of 30 in units 3 and 4 of VCE English as a Second Language; or

an equivalent result in an equivalent English subject.

• Tertiary study  satisfactorily completed, in an English medium educational institution#, either:

the equivalent of at least 72 Monash credit points (three standard full-time semesters) of a university degree or Australian VET diploma, or equivalent; or

the equivalent of at least 48 Monash credit points (one standard full-time year) of postgraduate study.

b. Applicants whose secondary schooling was not entirely in English

• Secondary schooling achieved:

 a score of 25 in units 3 and 4 of VCE English or VCE Literature;

a score of 30 in units 3 and 4 of VCE English as a Second Language; or

an equivalent result in an equivalent English subject.

• Tertiary study  satisfactorily completed, in an English medium educational institution#, either:

the equivalent of at least 72 Monash credit points (three standard full-time semesters) of a university degree or Australian VET diploma, or equivalent; or

the equivalent of at least 48 Monash credit points (one standard full-time year) of postgraduate study.

 Monash English course - successfully completed a preparatory course in English language skills, at the appropriate level, at the Monash University English Language Centre or another program approved as equivalent; and gained any English test result required to demonstrate satisfactory completion of the course.

English tests - satisfactorily completed one of the following English tests, achieving the minimum overall score and minimum band/component score:

IELTS academic - Minimum overall score of 7.0  

Minimum component score: Reading: 6.5 Listening: 6.5 Writing: 7.0 Speaking: 7.0  

TOEFL Minimum overall score 100  Written section: 25   Other sections: 22

# An English medium institution is one where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution. Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken.

Note: All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of subsequent substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

 3.   Working with Children Check (WCC)

Due to the specialist nature of the teaching profession and the school placement component of this course, all successful applicants will be required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WCC) at the beginning of the course.  The WCC is required before students can attend school placement.  For further information on the WCC, please visit the Department of Justice (Victoria) website www.justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren.

How to Apply

This course is restricted and has a quota for entry due to the limitations associated with providing teaching placements. Students are required to apply and be approved by Monash University before they can enrol in units through OUA.

Applications for the Graduate Diploma of Education(Primary) for 2012 have now closed. Please note that there is no mid-year intake for this program.

Practicum Placements

There is a practical component to this course which will require students to attend school placement throughout their studies for a minimum of 50 days:

• EDF4315 Professional Contexts 1A 10 days
• EDF4317 Professional Contexts 2A 15 days
• EDF4316 Professional Contexts 1B 10 days
• EDF4318 Professional Contexts 2B 15 days

Placements will occur concurrently with the two core units in each Session. The Monash University Placements Office will help students to arrange and coordinate their placements.

Students must meet the placement requirement, both in terms of performance and number of days, to be eligible for the award and teacher registration. At least half of the total hours of school placement needs to occur in an Australian setting and half needs to be in a setting other than the student’s current place of employment (where applicable). Supervision of students on placement must meet the VIT (Victorian Institute of Teaching) requirements for supervised teaching practice.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary), students must complete 12 units:

• 8 Core units
• 4 Core Professional Placement units (one in each session)

This is a 'lock-step' course and successful applicants must enrol in 2 core units and 1 practicum placement unit per session, as outlined in the study plan provided by Monash University. Due to the practicum requirements there can be no deviation from this study pattern.

The course is normally studied over two years and the award must be completed within four years. Successful applicants must have continuous enrolment in this course and intermission or leave of absence is not permitted. No deferment is permitted for successful applicants.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
