The Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) provides experienced teachers and educators with a practical toolkit for professional development. The course includes both small scale research projects and coursework units covering effective use of ICT in schools and classroom learning environments, pedagogical issues related to the use of computers, the impact on the teacher's role and the use of multimedia and the Internet in the classroom.

This course takes a highly practical and hands-on approach to developing research skills, and is
designed to encourage students to identify questions for further investigation. Students will explore a range of research methodologies and methods used to investigate educational settings as well as ethics and the role for the educational researcher.

There are no compulsory on-campus attendance requirements in any Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) units offered through Open Universities Australia.

Career Outcomes

The Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their professional and personal development to meet their teacher registration requirements or to gain employment seniority in their educational setting. Graduates of this course may apply to continue their studies at a doctoral level.

Eligibility

Applicants require a four year University qualification and recognised teaching experience for entry into this course.

International applicants must have completed a four year degree and teaching experience. The required IELTS score is 6.5

  2. Prepare supporting documents

    • Check that you have all the required documents, according to individual course requirements and your personal circumstances, specifically:

      1. Your curriculum vitae - required for entry into postgraduate courses only.
      2. Certified copies of academic transcripts - required in most cases but check course eligibility rules.
      3. A letter of recommendation from your employer on company letterhead - recommended for entry using work experience.
      4. Certified legal documentation - if you have changed your name e.g. a marriage certificate, deed poll name change certificate.
      5. Certified legal documentation - if you need to correct an error in your date of birth e.g. a birth certificate.
      6. English language test results - if your courses were not predominantly in English e.g. IELTS or equivalent test results.
      7. Official translations of any documents not in English.

      A "certified" copy is a copy bearing the recognised mark of a Justice of the Peace, Commission of Oaths or declarations, Public Notary or a Solicitor.

    • Create an electronic copy of your attachments:

      For each certified document, scan and save it on your computer. Save your curriculum vitae to your computer, then get ready to upload all documents in the form.

    • Do not send original documents as they will not be returned.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of Master of Science (Science and Mathematics Education) students must complete eight units.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Applicants are advised to contact Curtin University for information about RPL and credit policies and procedures.

Recommended Study Pattern

It is highly recommended that students enrol in SMEC627 Science and Mathematics Education Research Methods as their first unit. Full-time students can choose to enrol in SMEC625 Science and Mathematics Education Multimedia as a second unit.
