The Diploma of Retail Management provides a qualification for students interested in a career in management in a retail store or wholesale outlet. Graduates of this course will have enhanced employment opportunities as a store manager, merchandise manager, buyer or sales manager.

Career Outcomes

This qualification provides skills and knowledge required by those who hold or wish to hold higher management positions. Individuals with this qualification are able to perform roles, such as:

  • a key management role, management in a large retail or wholesale business
  • managing a small to medium retail group, store or franchise outlet
  • managing an independent retail store
  • managing a wholesale outlet.

TAFE courses can be credited towards your OUA degree

Many OUA courses provide pathways through the qualifications needed to develop your career from TAFE Diplomas through to undergraduate Bachelors degrees and then on to the postgraduate qualifications:  Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters degrees. Your TAFE qualification may provide you with the eligibility to apply for a higher level course or can provide you with unit exemptions and credit towards your university degree.

Eligibility

The entry requirement for the Diploma of Retail Management qualification is sufficient relevant wholesale or retail employment experience or recognition of current competence in the following required three pre-requisite units:

  • SIRT009A - SIRXCOM001A Communicate in the Workplace
  • SIRT010A - SIRXIND001A Work Effectively in a Retail Environment
  • SIRT011A - SIRXSLS004A Build Relationships with Customers

If students do not have relevant work experience, they must successfully complete these three pre-requisite units first before enrolling into other core units within this qualification.

Assessment

Online submission of assessments for all units is required via the Swinburne learning management system. There is no requirement for an invigilated exam for this course.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of Diploma of Retail Management students must complete 12 core units. – or complete 9 core units and have sufficient relevant wholesale or retail employment experience or recognition of current competence in the three prerequisite units.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Recognition of prior learning is a process that assesses the individual’s formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes or standards for entry to, and/or partial or total completion of, a qualification.

The Recognition of Prior Learning/Credit section on each of the university course pages on the OUA website has information about credit or unit exemptions for your previous study at TAFE. The Eligibility section of some courses lists TAFE qualifications required before you can apply to be admitted to the course.

Applicants with relevant on-the-job experience or with completion of part of a relevant course may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning. If you believe you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning you will need to provide details of your relevant qualifications or experience in the application form for the course.
