Description
This unit explores the nature and importance of the links between commercial accountability, risk management, and ethical and sustainable business practices in a global environment in a commercial organisation in terms of compliance, transparency and responsiveness to stakeholders. The unit begins by introducing the broad topic areas of commercial accountability, business ethics and governance expectations together with the concepts of compliance or being held to account, transparency or giving account and responsiveness to stakeholders or taking account. Such an approach also includes an exploration of the notion of corporate social responsibility and its implications for broader sustainability reporting initiatives. The unit also investigates several philosophical contributions to the study of ethical decision-making and behaviour. Based on these theoretical perspectives a comprehensive ethical decision making framework is presented which can be applied by business leaders to enable them to make ethical decisions leading to ethical behaviour. Corporate governance is further explored against the backdrop of the global financial crisis and more recently the issues within the European community. Finally the unit explores the identification of potential sources of risk and opportunity, and reflects on the management of financial and non-financial risks and opportunities.
