Description

Get a great start to your study. In this unit you are presented with knowledge and generic skills relevant to studying at a tertiary level. The unit leads you through a staged process from submission of a brief non-academic writing task, through to completion of a researched and referenced academic essay. Along the way, you learn how to develop your formal writing skills, read and interpret academic texts, and use library and internet resources to research and support academic arguments. You also learn ways to organise your time and resources, approaches to assignment writing, how to relate reference material to assigned writing, protocols of in-text referencing (Harvard/Author-Date) and techniques for compiling a bibliography. At the completion of this unit, you should be able to plan and manage your study, read and comprehend texts appropriate to undergraduate study, access and use a range of resources and recognise and apply academic conventions required for written assignments.
