Description

Develop an understanding of Practice-led Research as it applies to the development of a writing folio. In this unit, you will explore the approaches and methodologies of Practice-led Research and investigate the components of studio-based practice and research. The unit will deepen your understanding of the importance of reflective practice and reflexivity for writers involved in Practice-led Research. It will give you an understanding of how the planning process can assist the creation of, and problem solving for, the production of a major piece of writing. The development of a folio of work, including artefact and exegesis, begins in this unit and is continued in Folio B.

Learning Outcomes

This unit is aimed at writers who wish to develop their skills further by producing a major piece of work for publication. It will:

  1. develop further the students’ insights into the process of writing and the concept of theories through the study of samples of published works
  2. develop further the students’ insights into Practice-led Research as it applies to the development and production of a writing folio
  3. canvass different strategies based on a further understanding of the planning process for thinking about and problem-solving in the production of a major piece of writing
  4. offer a form of supervisory support to students as they further develop their critical and analytical skills
  5. provide a number of approaches to formal academic writing and creative or professional writing and build upon those introduced in earlier subjects
  6. provide students with further insights into how they might more extensively develop and critique in a more focussed way
  7. offer students the opportunity to participate in and build an online community of practice with peers and tutors.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. develop strategies for researching and planning a major piece of writing and working autonomously
  2. articulate insights into the strengths and weaknesses of their personal approach to writing and to the role of practice-led research in relation to their own writing
  3. demonstrate an understanding of the role of the exegesis, theory and praxis in relation to the production of a creative/original artefact
  4. complete critical analyses of exegetical writing
  5. complete a detailed proposal for their major piece of writing
  6. actively participate in on-line communities of practice
  7. demonstrate a high order of skill in analysis, critical evaluation and/or professional application through the planning and execution of project work or a piece of scholarship or research
  8. demonstrate the ability to think rigorously and independently through the analyses of other writers’ works.
