The Bachelor of Arts, Griffith University offers students the chance to study from a wide range of areas, allowing students to tailor a course that suits their individual needs. An Arts degree is perfect for those who have a love of learning.

Career Outcomes

The Griffith University Bachelor of Arts develops student skills as they progress through each level of the degree. Students will build advanced skills in reading, analysis, interpretation and debate. These skills are essential for careers in the media, education, public administration and business.

Award Requirements

A student must complete 24 units or their equivalent, comprised of the following elements:

  • The degree will normally be of three years duration for full-time students, but part-time students may take up to ten years to accumulate units towards the degree
  • At least eight units must be Griffith University units studied via Open Universities Australia
  • A student must complete at least one Major sequence of eight units, with four units at Level 1, two units at Level 2 and another two units at Level 3
  • The remaining 16 units for the degree can be made up from a combination of Level 1, 2 & 3 units
  • A maximum of ten units can be taken at First Year Level over the entire degree
  • A minimum of six units must be taken at Third Year Level over the entire degree.

Exit Points

Students who do not wish to complete an entire degree are able to complete either a Certificate of Arts, or a Diploma of Arts, depending on their needs. These smaller qualifications are beneficial for students who need to develop specialised knowledge or are just beginning their study and experiencing some trepidation.

Certificate of Arts

To achieve the Certificate of Arts, students must complete one approved Major, a total of eight units. This consists of four units at Level 1, two units at Level 2 and two units at Level 3. At least two units of the Certificate will need to be Griffith University units offered through Open Universities Australia.

Note: Students intending to complete the Art History or Religion Studies Major will need to complete an additional two Griffith University units (in addition to the eight units within the Major) in order to meet this requirement. These can be any two Griffith University units offered through Open Universities Australia.

Diploma of Arts

To achieve the Diploma of Arts, students must complete at least one Major (eight units) and Electives (eight units), a total of 16 units. The major sequence must include four units at level 1, two units at level 2 and two units at level 3. Students can take a maximum of eight units at first year level. At least eight units must be Griffith University units offered through Open Universities Australia.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Students may be able to receive credit for previous studies conducted at other institutions. For further information please contact the Open Universities Australia Officer, Off Campus & Assignment Handling Services at Griffith University.

Registering in this Course

Students are required to register with Griffith University for this degree by completing a registration form and paying the required fee. The non-refundable $100 registration fee is payable when the form is submitted. While there is no immediate requirement for potential students to register in this degree, students are recommended to register after completing 6-8 units in order to receive advice on credit and unit selection.

Recommended Study Pattern

You are recommended to follow this study pattern:

  1. Start with SSK12
  2. Choose a major sequence and complete all Level 1 units first
  3. Complete no more than eight elective units at Level  1
  4. Complete Level 2 and 3 studies

Course Admission Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible, students must meet the following requirements:

  • At least 4 OUA Undergraduate units that contribute towards the degree requirements of the Griffith University program into which admission is sought with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for each unit

About Commonwealth supported places

A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to the university towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported places are only available for students who wish to enrol in a full course of study and are required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. Eligible students in Commonwealth supported places can also receive assistance with their student contribution in the form of HECS-HELP.

To be eligible for Commonwealth support, you must be:

  • An Australian citizen OR;
  • A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR;
  • The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.
