The Graduate Diploma in Australian Folklife Studies course is available only to existing students. No new applications will be processed and only students who are already admitted will be able to complete the award.

Course Objectives

Folklife studies emphasises the application of the understandings gained from a study of folklife to a wide variety of social, cultural, organisational and human needs.

These units and qualification will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand some fundamentals of the human condition and especially to professionals involved in human services, heritage studies, organisational behaviour, human resources, tourism, museology, cultural planning, librarianship and teaching.

How to Apply

Curtin University is discontinuing this award and no new applications for the Graduate Diploma in Australian Folklife Studies will be accepted. This course will continue to be available through OUA to existing students.

Transition Arrangements

Curtin University is committed to the fundamental principle that all students admitted to the Graduate Diploma in Australian Folklife Studies, and who have completed the introductory unit X 7001 before 2011, will be provided with an opportunity to complete the award by the end of SP3 2012. Curtin University is committed to discussion and consultation and welcomes your enquiry to ensure you are fully informed and understand the implication of the phasing out of the award.

Study Materials

The media used to teach these units include a dedicated website and print materials, including study guides.

Students will find it beneficial to have access to the internet for research and discussion purposes; however, it is not compulsory. Students without internet access are advised to contact the Program Coordinator before commencing their studies.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Australian Folklife Studies students must complete 6 units or equivalent.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Students may be able to receive credit for previous study and are encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator to discuss their application.

Recommended Study Pattern

Students are advised to follow the numeric order of units, as each unit builds on the previous study.

  • Students must have completed X7001 and X7002 before 2012.
  • X7003 (Advanced Issues) should only be taken after completion of X7001 and at least two other units.
  • Students must have completed Folklore and Folklife Fieldwork (X7002) before enrolling for Folklife: A Multicultural Perspective (X7004), or be taking X7002 while undertaking X7004.
