International students

English proficiency

While you study and interact with fellow students, you will be able to further develop your English language skills. However, before you start your study journey you should be able to demonstrate a basic proficiency in written and spoken English.

International student English requirements

As all courses are taught in English, you will need to demonstrate a level of proficiency in the English language. The English language requirements apply to international students and other students whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English.

Recommended English Proficiency

To make your study as successful as possible, we recommend international students achieve an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall score of at least:

  • 6.5 for undergraduate study
  • 7.00 for postgraduate study

Macquarie University offers an IELTS online preparation course for students who wish to improve their performance in the IELTS test.

Documentation in Languages other than English

If a student needs to submit foreign-language documents such as medical certificates, prior academic results or application documents for postgraduate program, the documents must be accompanied by certified English translations completed by a professional translator.
