The combined degree of Master of International Security Studies with the Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism provides a comprehensive study of both the traditional and non-traditional security issues. The Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism covers security dimensions relating to law enforcement, intelligence and asymmetric threats. While the Master of International Security Studies examines a wider range of non-traditional security issues that range from pandemics, natural disasters, humanitarian intervention, economic security and environmental security.

Course Objectives

On completion of the double Masters, students will have:

1.         Display engagement with the field of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism plus Security Studies through the examination and exploration of critical texts, concepts and theories relating to the field.

2.         Investigate a substantial body of literature relating to Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism plus Security Studies

3.         Formulate an awareness of context, particularly an understanding of cultural diversity and different cultural conventions and practices as they relate to the field.

4.         Demonstrate higher order communication skills including the ability to present sustained and persuasive written arguments cogently and coherently.

5.         Model research skills, particularly the ability to select appropriately, to integrate knowledge from diverse sources, to evaluate its significance and relevance, synthesise material and present findings logically, rationally and lucidly.

Career Outcomes

Graduates will be equipped with the skills to seek careers or career development in defence, intelligence and law enforcement, as well as diplomatic service, emergency management and roles in international humanitarian agencies.

Eligibility

Applicants require an undergraduate degree from a recognised university.

Applicants who do not have an academic qualification should refer to the Eligibility information in either the Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism course or the Master of International Security Studies course.

How to Apply

This course is restricted. Students are required to apply and be approved by Macquarie University before they can enrol in units through OUA.

Students will need to submit an application form by mail with originals or certified copies and evidence of their previous degrees and academic transcripts.

Applications for the Master of International Security Studies with the degree of Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism are due one month prior to the start of the session.

Transition Arrangements

In 2012 Macquarie University is introducing new specialisations in the PICT courses.

Students will be permitted to either complete the award within the existing course structure or given the opportunity to transition to the new course structure with a specialisation.

Re-titled units
From 2012 some of the PIC units have been re-titled as indicated in the table below.
Students who have completed any of these units must not enrol in the re-titled unit

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of  Master of International Security Studies / Master of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism students must complete twelve units.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Applicants should contact the course coordinator for information about Credit policies at Macquarie University.

Recommended Study Pattern

PICT: Students complete a specialisation of six units in either Policing or Intelligence or Counter Terrorism or the General PICT program

ISS: Students complete six units from the International Security Studies program.

From 2012 some PIC units have been retitled as indicated in the Course Structure below: PIC831; PIC841; PIC880; PIC910 and students who have completed any of these PIC units should not enrol in the re-titled unit

Please note: It is not recommended to enrol in more than 2 units per Study Period or Session.

4. General PICT

Students undertaking the General PICT program complete one Policing unit, one Intelligence unit, one Counter Terrorism unit and one Cyber Terrorism unit. General PICT students complete two units from the Electives list below as part of their six unit specialisation.
