The Master of Technology (Business Systems) is designed to suit the needs of a wide range of participants from different industry backgrounds. Its purpose is to build on the students experience and extend students knowledge and skills in relation to both information technology and its capacity to create value in an organisational context.

The program aims to address both operational and strategic challenges. It is designed for professionals who do not already have formal ICT qualifications.

Information technology is an integral component in many business environment. With its rapidly changing nature there is a need for skilled professionals who can lead in this dynamic environment.  The Master of Technology (Business Systems) provides a framework of conceptual knowledge and problem solving strategies for the use of information technology as a major component of business strategy and related operations.  

This program aims to develop students who are able to contribute to the design, development and implementation of information related systems within their relevant domain to address both operational and strategic challenges.

Course Objectives

This course provides students with the opportunity to achieve the following objectives:


1. apply knowledge of the key issues, tasks and roles in an Information Technology environment to business outcomes
2. demonstrate an understanding of team dynamics and other factors responsible for building social capital and apply this learning to achieve specific outcomes.
3. participate effectively in leading teams and managing stakeholders in the context of complex environments
4. design and execute projects
5. demonstrate an understanding of the role of electronic media and communication in organisations and apply this learning in context
6. identify business objectives and develop procedures and workflows in collaboration with key stakeholders
7. apply Information Technology strategies to business functions (e.g Logistics and Supply Chain Management)
 

Eligibility

This course is open to students who hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent.
 

Applicants who have completed the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) or equivalent. Special entry is also available through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and relevant experience. Entry points will vary according to Swinburne Exemption and RPL policies.
 

The recommended progression to Masters level for applicants without prior studies is through the Graduate Certificate in the first instance, with articulation to Graduate Diploma and Masters levels being conditional upon successful completion of the subordinate level.

This course is restricted. Students are required to apply and be approved by Swinburne University of Technology before they can enrol in units through OUA.

Applications for the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Technology (Business Systems) are due by Friday two weeks prior to the close of enrolment.

  2. Prepare supporting documents

    • Check that you have all the required documents, according to individual course requirements and your personal circumstances, specifically:

      1. Your curriculum vitae - required for entry into postgraduate courses only.
      2. Certified copies of academic transcripts - required in most cases but check course eligibility rules.
      3. A letter of recommendation from your employer on company letterhead - recommended for entry using work experience.
      4. Certified legal documentation - if you have changed your name e.g. a marriage certificate, deed poll name change certificate.
      5. Certified legal documentation - if you need to correct an error in your date of birth e.g. a birth certificate.
      6. English language test results - if your courses were not predominantly in English e.g. IELTS or equivalent test results.
      7. Official translations of any documents not in English.

      A "certified" copy is a copy bearing the recognised mark of a Justice of the Peace, Commission of Oaths or declarations, Public Notary or a Solicitor.

    • Create an electronic copy of your attachments:

      For each certified document, scan and save it on your computer. Save your curriculum vitae to your computer, then get ready to upload all documents in the form.

    • Do not send original documents as they will not be returned.

Transition Arrangements

This degree has been retitled from the Master of Technology (Business Systems Design and Management) and the new course structure is available from Study Period 1 2012.

Existing students are encouraged to transfer to the new program structure.

Existing students may continue their studies in the pre2012 program but two units (MTB240 and MTB330) will be offered only in 2012.

New students starting in 2012 must not enrol in MTB240 or MTB330

Study Materials

The media used to teach these units include online materials. Online, students will use resources such as weblinks, discussion forums with students and discussion forums with eTutors. Students may receive a CD-ROM that includes lectures (in audio files) as well as PDF full-text lectures for some units.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) students must complete eight units.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Applicants with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be granted ‘credit’ and/or entry to the course with ‘advanced standing’. University policies apply and applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process where a student may be granted credit or partial credit towards a qualification in recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.
 

Recommended Study Pattern

Graduate Diploma of Technology (Business Systems) students complete two core MTB units and four additional MTB units.plus two Electives.
