Information technology is an integral component in the modern business environment. With its rapidly changing nature there is a need for skilled professionals who can lead in this dynamic environment.
This program aims to develop students who are able to contribute to the design, development and implementation of information related systems within their relevant domain to address both operational and strategic challenges.
The key objective of the Graduate Certificate of Technology (Business Systems) is to provide a breadth of knowledge in the specialist area of Information Technology in the context of business support. The Graduate Certificate provides specialist knowledge of the principles underlying Information Technology and its role in organisations along with appropriate skills.
Course Objectives
The Graduate Certificate provides students with the opportunity to achieve the following objectives:
1. identify and critique key issues, tasks and roles in various Information Technology environments
2. design and develop basic software
3. understand and apply technical processes to problem solving
4. analyse and critique the impact of various organisational functional roles and cultures on collaborative practice
5. identify stakeholder perspectives and their role in project development
6. participate effectively as a team member in a development environment
7. communicate effectively within and across business and technical teams
8. evaluate traditional and contemporary approaches to systems analysis and design methodologies.
Eligibility
This course is open to students who hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent.
Applicants with an approved undergraduate degree in a non-Information Technology discipline from a recognised tertiary institution or approved equivalent with at least 12 months relevant work experience. As no prior knowledge of Information Technology is assumed, applicants with an Information Technology related degree will be considered only if that degree was awarded over four years ago in which case advanced standing will depend on the applicant’s industry experience.
Applicants without an undergraduate degree but who have significant relevant employment experience, normally at least 4 years. The relevance of work experience will be assessed in line with Swinburne RPL Policy. Applications for exemption based on completed units in other degree studies will also be considered in line policy. Applicants may be required to be interviewed as part of the approval process.
