The Bachelor of Technology (Computing Studies) is designed to give you a foundation in programming and Information Technology fundamentals, while also providing you with the opportunity to study outside the realm of IT and to gain a range of skills in other areas. This innovative degree is taught online to allow you to apply what you are learning immediately.
With this degree you choose most of your program of study and essentially build your own degree. This allows you to build a solid foundation in programming and IT fundamentals, while also offering you the flexibility to engage with topics outside the field of IT.
Career Outcomes
Research indicates that many employers want graduates with computing skills, but also with knowledge and skills across many other disciplines, such as business, communications and commerce. Employment opportunities are as flexible and broad as the degree itself. By studying a wide range of topics, both in computing and in other fields, graduates can pursue careers in pure IT roles, as well as in other areas that require IT experience, including marketing, advertising, accounting and health administration.
Graduates of this course are exposed to a broad range of topics both in IT and in other fields, including focused study in their chosen application area. This provides the necessary breadth and depth of skills for employment not only in IT fields such as frontline support and system administration, but also in other fields that require IT experience, including marketing, advertising, accounting and health administration.
However, graduates often become IT professionals in fields such as: business analysis, helpdesk and desktop support, network/systems administration, technical writing and desktop publishing, testing, QA and web development.
Professional Recognition
This degree is accredited to the professional level – the highest possible – with the Australian Computer Society (ACS), which has reciprocal membership agreements worldwide. Graduates can apply for ACS Certified Professional status for global recognition.
Award Requirements
To obtain the Bachelor of Technology (Computing Studies) you must complete 24 units, and meet these requirements:
- Complete 8 core units
- Complete 1 Information Technology Elective and 3 Advanced Information Technology Electives
- Complete an approved minor stream sequence of 4 units from any discipline
- Complete 8 general electives
- At least 8 of the units above must be studied through RMIT
Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
Students may be able to receive credit for previous studies completed at other institutions or for work/life experience (RPL). A fee of $50 is applicable to have your credit assessed. Documentation will be required to support your application, such as;
- a certified copy of an Academic Transcript with final grades for Higher Education studies
- a certified copy of a Statement of Attainment for any completed TAFE studies
- course outlines showing content, learning outcomes and assessment requirements
- an explanation of the grading structure used.

Students entering the degree from an IT background (professional or academic) may be eligible to have the two-unit requirement for registration waived, and submit both degree registration and credit transfer documentation in a single application.
Registering in this Course
Students intending to complete the Bachelor of Technology must register for the RMIT degree. You are eligible to register as soon as you have completed a minimum of two core units. A fee of $100 is applicable to register for an award.
Students with a significant IT background (professional or academic) may be eligible to have the two-unit requirement for registration waived.
If you wish to Graduate at the Melbourne graduation ceremony in December, you must complete your final unit no later than study period 2 in the year you intend to graduate
A payment will be required to attend the graduation ceremony in Melbourne, for information about payments or application dates see www.rmit.edu.au/graduation. Alternatively students can apply to graduate in absentia at any time.

Upon completion of all units in the course structure: please write a cover letter notifying your intent to graduate, attached with an original or certified copy of a complete OUA Transcript of Results, and post these to the CS&IT Administration Office for further processing:

Recommended Study Pattern
To get the most out of this degree, students are recommended to follow these steps:
- Start with CPT110 and CPT120
- Complete Level 1 core units and electives
- Choose a minor sequence from the examples below, or send your preferred sequence to the School for approval
- Complete Level 2 and 3 core units, electives, and your chosen minor
Course Structure
Majors
Students complete a total of eight core Computing Studies units and four IT/Advanced IT units.
Minor
Students must also complete at a minor stream. The minor stream sequence is a selection of four units of a common discipline area, with at least one level 2 (or higher) unit. You may choose one of the sample minor sequences below; or build your own minor stream sequence, subject to approval by the School. Further IT study is allowed as a minor stream.
Electives
The eight general electives may be any unit from the OUA undergraduate catalogue.
