Accounting is a fundamental organisational tool for business planning and control. Proficiency in this specialised field can create a range of career opportunities in government and in business, management and finance across a multitude of industries.
Through a combination of required units and electives, students will gain knowledge and skills in many areas of Accounting and related fields. As students develop an understanding of accounting principles and practices, they explore the relationship between accounting, finance and economics, the law, management and marketing. Students will study, in detail, specialised areas including Financial Accounting, Corporate Reporting, Taxation Law, Auditing, Management Accounting and Communications. Students also have the opportunity of selecting elective units, so as to tailor the degree to individual needs.
Career Outcomes
This broad-based business degree will enable students to primarily develop expertise in professional accounting. Coupled with a dedicated industry focus and an extensive range of unit choices, the degree will produce highly employable graduates with a strong and diverse skill base.
Professional Recognition
The Bachelor of Accounting is accredited by the two major Australian accounting professional bodies, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and CPA Australia.
Award Requirements
To qualify for the Bachelor of Accounting from University of South Australia, students must meet all of the following requirements:
- A student must complete 24 units
- A student must complete 18 set units
- A student must complete 6 elective units
- A student must complete at least 8 units through University of South Australia
Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
Students may receive credit for previous studies conducted at other institutions. Please contact UniSA for further information prior to registering through Open Universities Australia. Credit applications should be submitted at least six weeks prior to registering in the units. Course Admission Eligibility Criteria
(Commonwealth supported place)
Applicants for a Commonwealth supported place are required to have ONE of the following qualifications:
- Qualified for SACE To be eligible for selection in 2012, applicants are required to have the following SACE qualifications:
- completed 200 credits of subjects ;
- achieved a grade of C1 or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2 ;
- achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2; and
- obtained a competitive ATAR of 70 or higher
- Obtained an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank ATAR of 70 or higher
- Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements.
- Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements.
- Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements.
- Completed at least 4 OUA Undergraduate units and maintained a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 or higher.
- Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Diploma or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements.
- Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements.
- Completed the University Foundation Studies program or UniSA PAL.

About Commonwealth supported places
A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to the university towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported places are only available for students who wish to enrol in a full course of study and are required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. Eligible students in Commonwealth supported places can also receive assistance with their student contribution in the form of HECS-HELP.
To be eligible for Commonwealth support, you must be:
- An Australian citizen OR;
- A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR;
- The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.

Bachelor of Accounting students complete a total of 18 core units:

Electives
Students must complete six elective units. These can be taken from any discipline area; however, their content must not be comparable to the core units. Students may choose to use the electives as a block. Students must obtain approval of elective choices by emailing the OUA Student Advisors at UniSA prior to enrolling.
Students are recommended to begin their studies with SSK10 Tertiary Learning Strategies as an elective unit if they haven’t previously undertaken any tertiary study. No credit will be awarded for SSK10 if the unit is undertaken after the completion of the level 1 units.
