The Diploma of Financial Planning provides a qualification for students interested in a career in financial planning. This is a licensed occupation and core units in this qualification meet Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) RG146 requirements for Tier 1 status. Additional units are offered to enable OUA students to complete studies in specialised areas of financial planning.
Career Outcomes
The services of financial advisers are forecast to grow strongly over the coming years, due as a result of the ageing population and the growth in the superannuation and funds management industries. Graduates from this course would be suited for employment in specialist areas such as financial planning, management investments, life insurance and superannuation.

TAFE courses can be credited towards your OUA degree.
Many OUA courses provide pathways through the qualifications needed to develop your career from TAFE Diplomas through to undergraduate Bachelor degrees and then on to the postgraduate qualifications: Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Master degrees. Your TAFE qualification may provide you with the eligibility to apply for a higher level course or can provide you with unit exemptions and credit towards your universities studies.
Eligibility
Although there are no entry requirements for this course, it is beneficial if students have a Certificate IV in Financial Services and an interest or background in financial services.
Assessment
Online submission of assessments for all units is required via the Sydney Institute's learning management system. There are no invigilated exams in this course.
Award Requirements
To qualify for the award of the Diploma of Financial Planning students must complete 15 units. Three additional elective units are required for compliance with the ASIC RG146 standard. The three additional units are required by industry for employment; without them employment outcomes will be significantly reduced.
Recommended Study Pattern
To get the most out of this course, students must enrol in units concurrently within each module of study during one Study Period. Modules may be studied in any order throughout the academic year, subject to pre-requisite requirements.
Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
Recognition is granted according to TAFE NSW policies. Students can seek Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for qualifications with similar course and unit requirements, and/or previous or current employment in the Financial Planning industry.
The Recognition of Prior Learning/Credit section on each of the university course pages on the OUA website has information about credit or unit exemptions for your previous study at TAFE. The Eligibility section of some courses list TAFE qualifications required before you can apply to be admitted to the course.
