The Bachelor of Business from Swinburne University of Technology provides students with skills and abilities relevant to a range of professional careers in the private and public sectors.

Students have the opportunity to enhance a number of business and communication skills valued by employers. This degree is designed to meet the needs of students in preparation for lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world, and for employment in organisations that demand flexibility.
This degree offers students the choice of one or two of the following six major study areas:

  • Economics
  • Information and Business Systems
  • Marketing
  • Tourism Management
  • Advertising
  • Finance

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Business may have specialised in the contemporary fields of Information and Business Systems and Tourism Management and Advertising or have elected to study Finance, Economics or Marketing for a more analytical and traditional approach.

Graduates will be suited to employment in both the public and private sectors in the fields of administration, management consulting, economic policy evaluation, financial analysis, banking and market analysis, advertising, the tourism industry and information technology.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the Bachelor of Business from Swinburne University of Technology, students must complete 24 units with the following requirements:

  • At least eight units must be Swinburne University of Technology units 
  • Completion of one prescribed major from either Finance, Economics, Marketing, Information and Business Systems, Tourism Management or Advertising (12 units) AND
  • Complete 12 electives OR 
  • Complete 1 Co-major sequence of 8 units plus 4 electives OR 
  • Complete 2 minor sequences of 4 units (8 in total), plus 4 electives OR 
  • Complete 1 minor sequence of 4 units plus 8 electives.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

Students may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (credit) for previous studies up to a maximum of 16 units. If applying for credit, documentation, including original transcripts of academic records or certified copies, subject outlines and an explanation of the grading system, must be sent to the Open Universities Australia Swinburne Coordinator. Credit cannot be given for studies completed more than 10 years ago.

Registering in this Course

Students should register with Swinburne University of Technology for the degree by completing a Degree Registration form and paying the required fee, in order to receive advice on credit, unit selection and degree information. The non-refundable $200 fee is payable when the form is submitted.

Recommended Study Pattern

To get the most out of this course students are recommended to follow these steps: 

  • Choose a Major
  • Complete your 12 Unit Major
  • Finish by studying your 12 elective units

Please note: From 2012 Swinburne is offering a new major in Finance. The Finance units are also offered as a co-major or minor for Bachelor of Business students studying any of the other majors offered in this degree.

Equivalent units: From 2012 Swinburne is offering two new units in economics: ECO100 Microeconomics and ECO101 Macroeconomics. Students who are required to complete Level 1 Economics units and who have completed ECO11 Principles of Economics or ECO12 Macroeconomics 1 must not enrol in the equivalent new unit and should contact Swinburne for enrolment advice.

In order to be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place, students must meet the following requirements:

  • 3 OUA Undergraduate units or equivalent at pass level

About Commonwealth supported places

A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to the university towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported places are only available for students who wish to enrol in a full course of study and are required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. Eligible students in Commonwealth supported places can also receive assistance with their student contribution in the form of HECS-HELP.

To be eligible for Commonwealth support, you must be:

  • An Australian citizen OR;
  • A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR;
  • The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.

  • English language test results - if your courses were not predominantly in English e.g. IELTS or equivalent test results.

Course Structure

Majors

 

Finance
This new major in Finance focuses on the financial aspects relating to corporate finance and global financial markets. The Finance major will give students the necessary skills for a career in either of the following areas: broking, investment banking, business analyst, corporate financial officer, accounting, retail banking, foreign exchange markets. 

Economics
Economics examines areas such as unemployment, inflation, foreign debt and environmental degradation. Students will develop skills in interpreting and evaluating economic commentaries and reports and in applying economic principles to real issues facing business and government.

Information and Business Systems
Understanding Business Information Systems and supporting technology is vital for any student entering the business world. This major focuses on the effective use of information and technology and the development of systems for solving business problems. Students who have completed this major are recommended to take the Information Systems Minor as part of their elective choice.

Marketing
Students will gain an understanding of marketing's central role in business strategy by examining topics such as consumer behaviour, customer focus, market research and planning, marketing channels, product and services management, advertising and promotion and business to business marketing.

Tourism Management
The Tourism Management major offers units covering the history and culture of tourism, management of tourist destinations and enterprises, marketing of travel and tourism services and the role of ecotourism in contributing to a sustainable industry.

Advertising
The Advertising major offers units in Advertising management, Concept Development and Copywriting, Regulation and Ethics, Media Planning and Purchasing and Media, Advertising, Sport and Society.

Electives

Students completing a Swinburne University of Technology prescribed major (ie Finance, Economics, Information and Business Systems, Marketing, Tourism Management or Advertising) must select 12 elective units chosen from any Open Universities Australia undergraduate unit.
