The Bachelor of Behavioural Studies from Swinburne University of Technology is structured to enable students to acquire knowledge and skills across a variety of study areas. This breadth of knowledge is complemented by focusing the content so that students who complete the course are better equipped to understand and explain human behaviour. This degree is structured differently to the Bachelor of Behavioural Studies (Psychology) and as such does not have emphasis on advanced statistical studies, laboratory assessments and report writing.

Degree courses which include psychological studies are valued in the Australian workplace and as a result, many industries are seeking employees with qualifications in psychology.

The Psychological Studies major in this course offers a broad introduction to basic psychological elements and concepts. Students can include a Co-major in Sociology or Minor specialisations in the areas of Statistics, Sociology, Human Resource Management, Public Relations, Indigenous Studies, Marketing and Criminology.

This degree is not accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.

For some units in the Bachelor of Behavioural Studies you are required to have access to the statistical package SPSS.

Award Requirements

To qualify for the Bachelor of Behavioural Studies, from Swinburne University of Technology, students must complete 24 units and meet the following requirements:

  • At least eight units must be Swinburne University of Technology units 
  • Complete the Psychological Studies Major consisting of 12 core units AND 
  • Complete 12 electives OR 
  • Complete 1 Co-major sequence of 8 units plus 4 electives OR 
  • Complete 2 minor sequences of 4 units (8 in total), plus 4 electives OR 
  • Complete 1 minor sequence of 4 units plus 8 electives.

Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit

You may be eligible for credit for previous studies up to a maximum of 16 units. If applying for credit, you must send complete documentation, including original transcripts of academic records or certified copies, unit outlines and an explanation of the grading system, to the Open Universities Australia Coordinator: ouald@swin.edu.au. Please note that credit cannot be gained for subjects completed more than 10 years ago.

Registering in this Course

Students should register with Swinburne University of Technology for the degree by completing a Degree Registration form and paying the required fee, in order to receive advice on credit, unit selection and degree information. The non-refundable $200 fee is payable when the form is submitted.

Recommended Study Pattern

To get the most out of this program, students are recommended to follow these steps:

Students are advised to study SSK13* early in their study program and students without previous mathematics are advised to study SSK17 Dealing with Numbers as an elective before enrolling in STA102 Foundations of Statistics.

  • Complete Swinburne's Psychological Studies major consisting of 12 core units AND
  • Complete 12 electives OR
  • Complete 1 Co-major sequence of 8 units plus 4 electives OR
  • Complete 2 minor sequences of 4 units (8 in total) plus 4 electives OR
  • Complete 1 minor sequence of 4 units plus 8 electives

About Commonwealth supported places

A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to the university towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported places are only available for students who wish to enrol in a full course of study and are required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. Eligible students in Commonwealth supported places can also receive assistance with their student contribution in the form of HECS-HELP.

To be eligible for Commonwealth support, you must be:

  • An Australian citizen OR;
  • A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR;
  • The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study.

Course Structure

Majors

Students must complete the 12 unit Psychological Studies Major stream.

Please note: PSS110 and PSS120 have a co-requisite of STA102, therefore, students intending to enrol into PSS110 and PSS120 must ensure that they have either successfully completed STA102 prior to their enrolment OR have enrolled into both PSS110 and STA102 or PSS120 and STA102 in the same study period.

Electives

Students can select their minor sequences from those listed below. Students can complete a co-major in Sociology by undertaking the two minors in Sociology as listed below (Sociology of Contemporary Societies Minor units plus Sociology Minor units).

Electives can be any undergraduate unit offered by Open Universities Australia. (Note: students choosing the Social Statistics Minor or the Sociology of Contemporary Societies Minor will be required to select an additional elective unit.)
