Description
Gain an introduction to a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the analysis of discourses and texts in a range of sites and social contexts. You will analyse a variety of written texts and conversations to uncover their cohesive factors as well as stylistic and varietal differences in discourse structure. The unit further explores conversational structure; narrative structure; indicators of semantic cohesion; the distribution of information in a text (givenness, focus, etc.); the place of knowledge and context in language and understanding and the construction of texts in social contexts.
Additional information: Please note that all Monash ALMX units are worth double the number of credit points as standard undergraduate units. This means they require double the work of most OUA units and that only six units are required to complete a Master's degree. Students should take one ALMX unit per Session if part-time or two units for a full-time study load.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this unit students will be able to:
- summarise key theoretical and methodological approaches and to discourse analysis
- compare the work of competing theorists, and recognise their role in the development of discourse analysis theories
- identify and describe the discourse conventions of casual conversations, narratives and selected forms of institutional discourse
- apply at least one methodology to a selected context.
