Macquarie University’s Bachelor of Arts (OUA) degree gives students the opportunity to study units from a range of disciplines in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The degree offers considerable flexibility, allowing students to meet their individual needs and interests.
Students can choose from these majors: Cultural Studies, English, Ancient History, Modern History, Philosophy, Politics and Sociology.
Units in the Macquarie University course are based on online teaching. Access to the internet is essential.
Career Outcomes
The degree develops research, analytical, critical thinking and writing skills, as well as specific knowledge in individual subject areas.
Students can go on to a wide range of careers upon completion of this degree, including business, education, government and other sectors. For many students, this degree will just be the beginning as they continue with postgraduate study, an example of which is teaching. To ensure the appropriate subject selection, students should check with the Institute of Teachers in their home state, or contact Macquarie University for further information.
Transition Arrangements
Macquarie University has introduced a new curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts.
From 2012 students will select from 7 majors in Ancient History, Modern History, Cultural Studies, English, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology. Students may include a maximum of 10 Level 1 units and a minimum of 6 Level 3 units in their 24 units required to qualify for the new BA. Students must include a People unit and a Planet unit in their electives and may include one SSK unit.
The pre2012 Macquarie University BA offered students a choice of 4 streams in Critical and Cultural Studies; History and Politics; Philosophy; Society, Life and Learning. Students may include a maximum of 12 Level 1 units and a minimum of 6 level 3 units in their 24 units required to qualify for the pre2012 BA.
Registered students should decide whether to follow the degree structure in place at the time of their BA registration or transfer to the new 2012 structure.
Unregistered students must submit their BA registration form to the OUA Program Manager at Macquarie University by 31st December 2011 if they intend to complete the pre2012 degree structure.
From 2012 all new and unregistered students will study towards the new BA degree structure. Each major consists of eight units including a Level 3 capstone unit.

Special Requirements
Transfer to Macquarie University
Students who wish to transfer to a HECS place (internal or external) in the BA degree at Macquarie University must complete a minimum of four Macquarie OUA units of study and have a GPA of 2.0 (credit average). Applicants apply through the NSW Universities Admission Centre (UAC) www.uac.edu.au
Award Requirements
To qualify for a Bachelor of Arts degree through Macquarie University students must meet the following requirements:
- Students must complete 24 units of study;
- Students must follow the degree structure in place in the year of registration in the degree.
- a maximum of 10 Level 1 units;
- a minimum of 6 Level 3 units;
- at least one specified People unit and at least one specified Planet unit
- one of these two must be an Arts unit from the specified list
- one of these two must be a non-Arts unit from the specified list;
- one SSK unit may be included.
Recognition of Prior Learning / Credit
Students registering for the Macquarie Bachelor of Arts degree through Open Universities Australia may be granted credit for previous non-Open Universities Australia studies, subject to the following rules:
- Units for which credit is sought must have been undertaken within the past 10 years;
- Only previous studies at an Australian university will be recognised for credit;
- A maximum of six units (three at Level 1 and three at Level 2) of generalised or unspecified credit may be granted for incomplete prior studies;
- A maximum of four units (two at Level 1 and two at Level 2) of generalised or unspecified credit may be granted for completed qualifications;
- Credit is granted at Level 1 and Level 2 only;
- There will be no reduction of the requirement to complete at least eight Macquarie Open Universities Australia units;

Registering in this Course
Students are eligible to register for the Macquarie Bachelor of Arts after successfully completing at least four Macquarie units. Students must follow the degree structure in place at the time of their BA registration with the University. A one-off administration fee of $A360 is charged to register. Recommended Study Pattern
- Students new to university study may want to enrol in an SSK study skills unit as one of their Electives before starting their Major units
- Students must complete Level 1 major units before studying Level 2 and Level 3 units.
- The Level 3 Capstone unit in a major must be the final unit in that area of study.
- A maximum of ten Level 1 units (including the Major units, Electives and the People and Planet units) may be included in this degree.
Registered students completing one of the previous BA streams should refer to the course structures linked from the Transition Arrangements before selecting their units for enrolment.

About Commonwealth supported places
A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to the university towards the cost of your education. Commonwealth supported places are only available for students who wish to enrol in a full course of study and are required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. Eligible students in Commonwealth supported places can also receive assistance with their student contribution in the form of HECS-HELP.

- A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR;
